Iodine Supplement Labels for Men: Daily Value Math and Thyroid Questions

If you take a multivitamin, a “thyroid support” product, or anything containing kelp or seaweed extract, you may be getting iodine from more than one source without realizing it. This guide shows you how to read iodine amounts on supplement labels, add them up across products, and understand why thyroid health is part of that conversation — without diagnosing anything yourself.

By the end, you’ll have a simple worksheet you can fill out with your own products and bring to a doctor or pharmacist.

What Iodine Actually Does, in Plain Terms

Iodine is a mineral your thyroid gland uses to make thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone affects your metabolism, energy level, heart rate, and body temperature regulation. You need a small, steady amount of iodine every day. You don’t need large amounts, and more is not automatically better.

According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adult men is 150 micrograms (mcg) per day. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) — the highest daily amount considered safe for most healthy adults — is 1,100 mcg per day. That upper limit exists because too much iodine can cause thyroid problems, not just too little.

How to Read the Iodine Line on a Supplement Label

Every supplement’s “Supplement Facts” panel lists iodine two ways: the amount in micrograms (mcg) and the %DV, or percent Daily Value. The FDA-established Daily Value for iodine is 150 mcg. That means a product listing “100% DV” for iodine is giving you 150 mcg per serving.

Here’s the label math in three steps:

  • Step 1: Find the mcg amount on the label. If only %DV is shown, multiply the %DV by 1.5 to get the mcg amount (for example, 200% DV = 300 mcg).
  • Step 2: Note the serving size. Some products require two or three capsules per serving — the mcg amount on the label is for the full serving, not one capsule.
  • Step 3: Repeat this for every product you take that could contain iodine, then add the totals together.

A single multivitamin at 100% DV (150 mcg) is a normal, expected amount. The math starts to matter when you’re combining a multivitamin with a separate “thyroid support” formula, a kelp or seaweed supplement, or an iodine-fortified product.

Where Iodine Hides Across Multiple Products

Iodine shows up in more places than most men expect. Common sources worth checking include:

  • Standard multivitamins — often include iodine at or near 100% DV, per the ODS fact sheet.
  • “Thyroid support” or “metabolism” supplements — these are frequently built around iodine, kelp, or bladderwrack.
  • Kelp, seaweed, or bladderwrack supplements — these ingredients are naturally high in iodine. ODS notes that dried seaweed (nori), a food-form example, can contain more than 100 mcg in a 2-tablespoon serving — well above what a single egg or serving of milk provides — so products built around seaweed ingredients deserve a closer label check than a standard multivitamin.
  • Iodized table salt — about 78 mcg per ¼ teaspoon, per ODS data. This adds up if you eat a lot of processed or restaurant food, which often uses iodized salt.
  • Dairy, eggs, and seafood — these are natural dietary sources, not supplement sources, but they count toward your total daily iodine intake alongside anything you supplement.

None of these sources is automatically a problem on its own. Myth vs. Reality: Iodine and Thyroid Health

  • Myth: More iodine automatically supports a healthier thyroid. Reality: Per ODS, intakes above the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (1,100 mcg/day) can inhibit thyroid hormone production and contribute to goiter, elevated TSH, or hypothyroidism — the opposite of what “thyroid support” marketing implies.
  • Myth: Iodine deficiency is a common problem for adult men in the United States. Reality: Because iodized salt and dairy are widespread in the U.S. food supply, ODS lists deficiency as more of a concern for specific groups — such as people who avoid iodized salt, dairy, seafood, and eggs — rather than the general adult male population.
  • Myth: A supplement label tells you your total iodine intake. Reality: A label only tells you what’s in that one product. Your actual total depends on everything you eat and take together, which is why the worksheet below asks you to list every source, not just one bottle.
  • Myth: If you have symptoms like fatigue or weight changes, iodine is the likely explanation. Reality: Fatigue, weight change, and low energy have many possible causes. Thyroid hormone problems are diagnosed with blood tests (TSH and related markers), not by guessing from symptoms or supplement labels alone.

What the Evidence Does — and Doesn’t — Show

The ODS fact sheet is clear that iodine’s relationship to thyroid function runs in both directions: too little causes problems, and too much causes different problems. It also identifies people with pre-existing autoimmune thyroid disease as a specific risk group for iodine-related complications.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) describes Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition that can cause an underactive thyroid, and states that people with Hashimoto’s “may be sensitive to harmful side effects from iodine,” including from high-iodine foods like kelp and seaweed as well as from supplements. NIDDK is clear that Hashimoto’s is confirmed through a doctor’s evaluation — medical history, a physical exam, and blood tests measuring thyroid hormones, TSH, and thyroid antibodies — not through symptoms or label-reading alone.

What neither source supports: using this article, or any supplement label, to self-diagnose a thyroid condition, decide you have or don’t have Hashimoto’s, or start, stop, or adjust any supplement or medication on your own. That determination requires bloodwork and a clinician’s evaluation.

A Conversation Worksheet for Your Doctor or Pharmacist

Before your next appointment, fill this out using your actual products. Bring it with you or read it off during a telehealth visit.

  • List every product you currently take that lists iodine, kelp, seaweed, or bladderwrack on the label, including the brand name and the mcg or %DV amount per serving.
  • Add the mcg amounts together using the label math above to get your estimated total daily supplement iodine intake.
  • Note your salt and diet pattern — do you regularly use iodized salt, or eat dairy, eggs, or seafood most days?
  • Write down any symptoms you’ve noticed (fatigue, weight change, temperature sensitivity, heart rate changes) and when they started, without assuming a cause.
  • Ask directly: “Based on everything I’m taking and eating, does my total iodine intake look appropriate, and would thyroid bloodwork make sense given my symptoms and history?”
